The medical examination for overseas employment

Most destination countries require a pre-departure medical examination at a centre they have approved. It is a genuine screening, not a formality, and a failure ends the application.

Where it must be done

At a centre approved by the destination country. A certificate from your own doctor, however thorough, will not be accepted. Approved centre lists are published and do change.

What is usually checked

Chest imaging, blood tests for communicable diseases, blood pressure, vision, and a general physical examination. Requirements vary by country and by the type of work.

Common reasons for being declared unfit

  • Untreated communicable disease
  • Uncontrolled blood pressure or diabetes readings on the day
  • Findings on chest imaging requiring investigation

Some of these are manageable if identified early. A general check-up with your own doctor several weeks beforehand costs little and prevents a wasted examination fee.

On the day

Take your passport and the exact photographs specified. Follow any fasting instruction given. Results are normally reported directly to the visa process rather than to you.

This is general information, not medical advice. Requirements are set by the destination country and can change.
