Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said on Sunday that it launched ballistic missiles at a US aircraft carrier and navy destroyer, claiming both vessels were damaged and withdrew from the area. The IRGC stated that the ships had harassed Iranian vessels and were participating in a maritime blockade. The US military’s Central Command said Iran did fire ballistic missiles at two navy warships but that both vessels evaded the attacks with no personnel harmed. CENTCOM said US forces subsequently struck three Iranian crude oil tankers in response. The IRGC also claimed its navy attacked a remotely operated US military vessel attempting to enter a protected area of the Strait of Hormuz, though it gave no details of damage. The Guards reiterated that the Strait of Hormuz is under Iranian management and called for US forces to leave the region. The incident is part of an escalating confrontation in which CENTCOM said it sank an Iranian oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman. The tensions follow threats from US President Donald Trump, who in late August posted an AI-generated video depicting Iran’s Kharg Island being attacked. Iranian authorities have warned of severe retaliation if that island is struck. Brent crude futures reached their highest level since late July on Friday as Middle East tensions drive concerns about global oil supplies.
