Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar telephoned Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide on Sunday to express Pakistan’s condolences following the death of King Harald V. Dar conveyed sympathies on behalf of Pakistan’s president, prime minister, field marshal, and the Pakistani people to the Norwegian royal family and nation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has designated Communications Minister Abdul Aleem Khan to represent Pakistan at the king’s funeral procession in Oslo on September 9. The two foreign ministers agreed to maintain close contact and to meet during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly.
The Norwegian king, Europe’s oldest living monarch at 89 years old, died on August 28 at Oslo University Hospital after being admitted on August 17 for treatment of a blood infection. He had reigned since 1991 and in 2024 received a permanent pacemaker after being hospitalised during a holiday in Malaysia.
Separately, Dar also held a telephone call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments. The Egyptian official invited Dar to visit Egypt and both countries agreed to meet during the UN General Assembly.
