Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani addressed a Safari Club International Pakistan Chapter conservation gala dinner on Sunday, saying that Pakistan possesses exceptional biodiversity and remarkable wildlife that must be protected as a collective responsibility. He stated that successful conservation happens when parliament, government, local communities, hunters, hunting outfitters and conservation organisations work together. Gilani noted that responsible and lawful hunting conducted sustainably can support wildlife conservation by providing benefits to communities living near wildlife. He stressed that legislative and policy frameworks must incorporate the views and experience of communities, wildlife professionals, hunters and other stakeholders to make meaningful conservation progress on the ground. The acting president acknowledged the legitimate role of responsible hunters who follow the law and uphold ethical standards while contributing to conservation and community development, and called for their rights to be balanced with their responsibilities to wildlife and future generations. He also recognised licensed hunting outfitters as important links between hunters, wildlife authorities and local communities whose field experience could support sustainable hunting and wildlife management. Gilani stated that Pakistan serves as an international example of how conservation, sustainable use and community development can reinforce each other, and called for federal and provincial institutions to work together with transparent, consistent and practical policies.
