US special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner touched down in Moscow on Saturday to negotiate paths toward ending the ongoing war in Ukraine. Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev welcomed them at the airport, and a motorcade transported them into the city. President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to meet with the two Americans at the Kremlin later in the day.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that the envoys plan to visit Kyiv on Sunday following their Moscow meetings. The Kremlin confirmed that Putin has ordered the military to cease strikes on Kyiv for three days starting from Saturday night in connection with the American delegation’s visit to Ukraine.
Substantial disagreements persist between the two sides on peace terms. A Kremlin source indicated that Putin remains committed to capturing additional territory, particularly in the Donetsk region, which he expects to complete by year’s end. Ukraine refuses to surrender captured land and rejects conditions it views as surrender. The Kremlin maintains that Russia’s earlier stated position remains firm: Ukraine must cede four entire regions claimed by Russia and abandon its NATO membership aspirations.
