A judicial magistrate in Karachi has approved a three-day physical remand for two suspects, Waqas and Ibrahim, in connection with an assault case in the Defence area of the city. The case emerged after a video circulated on social media showing a young man named Ali Jafri being attacked with a baseball bat by multiple assailants. According to his police statement, Jafri was initially struck from behind with a bat while leaving a restaurant on August 29, then forced into a vehicle and taken to an empty plot in Defence Phase 8, where he was beaten further and forced to sit through the recording of the incident. The attackers allegedly showed him pictures of his family and threatened similar violence against them if he reported the matter. Police arrested the two suspects the day before the court hearing. During Saturday’s proceedings, the defence counsel argued that the viral video had been created using artificial intelligence and claimed the victim was being pressured into having the case filed. Jafri’s lawyers requested forensic analysis of the video while the investigating officer sought custody for interrogation. The court approved the remand and returned the suspects to police custody. The case, registered at Sahil Police Station, names five suspects total, including three identified individuals, and charges them under provisions related to assault, kidnapping and threats. A social activist involved in bringing the matter to public attention stated that no financial dispute appeared to be involved in the incident.
