Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry has proposed creating a business facilitation centre that would consolidate port-related services for exporters and importers at one location. The proposal was made during a meeting to review progress on port-related projects. The centre would station dedicated representatives from relevant organisations at a single venue, allowing businesses to complete multiple port procedures without visiting separate offices. An integrated system would link applications to the main offices of participating organisations, enabling real-time processing and case tracking. According to the ministry statement, the initiative could substantially reduce costs related to trucking, container handling, storage, demurrage charges, vessel delays and administrative expenses. The benefits would be particularly significant for first-time users of port services. The minister said the centre would also improve coordination among maritime-sector organisations, eliminate procedural bottlenecks and boost efficiency. Standardising procedures could improve fee collection and reduce revenue leakages while higher trade volumes could generate additional income from port services, cargo handling and customs activities.
