Pakistan’s premier Twenty20 competition could move to January after the Pakistan Cricket Board and the league’s eight franchise owners discussed the proposal at a governing council meeting in London on September 1. The league’s media rights holder has suggested that moving out of the April-May window would address commercial concerns, as that period falls after Ramazan when companies have typically already committed their annual marketing budgets.

The PSL has been forced into April-May for the last two seasons because of international cricket commitments. The competition was traditionally held in February and March from 2016 through 2024, before shifting to accommodate the Champions Trophy and T20 World Cup schedules. Franchise owners have expressed concerns about whether broadcast revenue would remain fully protected under a different window, as the teams collectively receive 95 percent of broadcast revenue from the league’s central pool.

A January start would create fresh advertising opportunities but would pose significant challenges. The PSL would compete directly with South Africa’s SA20 and Australia’s Big Bash League, making it harder to attract international players who have become central to the league’s appeal. Pakistan’s harsh winter weather in Punjab venues also presents obstacles, with temperatures dropping to single digits and fog disrupting travel and match operations. Officials have discussed starting the tournament in Karachi, where winter conditions are milder, before moving to northern venues as temperatures improve.

The timing is feasible partly because Pakistan’s international cricket calendar has a clear gap from mid-November until March, with no scheduled home or away series during that period.
