Pakistan will observe Defence and Martyrs Day across the country on Sunday to pay tribute to those who made supreme sacrifices and to the soldiers who defended the nation with courage. The observance will reaffirm the country’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity against all threats.
September 6 commemorates 1965, when Indian forces launched an attack on Pakistan by crossing the international border under cover of darkness. Pakistan’s armed forces, with backing from the nation, repelled the assault and successfully defended the country.
Ceremonial gun salutes will begin the day’s events, with 31 guns to be fired in the capital and 21 guns in each provincial capital. Special prayers will be held in mosques after dawn prayers, seeking progress, prosperity and security for the nation, as well as for the liberation of Kashmir.
National media will broadcast special programmes throughout the day highlighting the sacrifices and valor of those who died and fought in defence of the country.
