An F-4 Phantom military aircraft crashed on Saturday at a base outside Athens during an airshow, killing both pilots. The aircraft went down during the annual Athens Flying Week event, with the crash occurring shortly after takeoff when the jet suddenly lost altitude. The two pilots did not eject from the aircraft before impact. Witnesses at the scene reported an explosion immediately following the crash. Several firefighting aircraft were sent to extinguish the resulting fire. The airshow was cancelled following the incident, and Defence Minister Nikos Dendias abandoned plans to attend an international fair in Thessaloniki to visit the crash site.
