A major theft occurred at the armoury of the Madras Regiment located in Secunderabad Cantonment in India. Thieves broke into the highly secured facility and stole four AK-203 rifles, six 9mm pistols, and one bore pistol, along with multiple magazines. They also took 720 rounds of ammunition for the AK-203 rifles and 1120 rounds for the 9mm pistols. The stolen items were valued at approximately 1.5 million Indian rupees.
The break-in took place despite round-the-clock security measures and surveillance systems at the cantonment. Military officials have not yet released detailed statements about the incident. Defence analysts have raised concerns about the security lapse, noting that it reflects broader systemic issues within Indian military institutions.
Experts pointed to a history of corruption and irregularities in the Indian armed forces, including a 2021 case involving the Central Bureau of Investigation naming 17 military personnel in connection with bribery during recruitment. They also referenced the Adarsh Housing Society scandal where senior military officers were implicated in illegal land seizures, and a recent case from August 2026 involving a Lieutenant Colonel in procurement irregularities.
Analysts warned that the stolen weapons could potentially be used in staged attacks or false-flag operations designed to serve particular political narratives. They urged investigators to examine the possibility of insider involvement and collusion in facilitating the theft.
